The U.S. Military Bagpiper Network was established in August, 2010, to fulfill the following objectives.

  1. Provide a forum in which U.S. military bagpipers can share their experiences of bagpiping at military events in order to establish and make available recommended guidelines for bagpiping at military events.
  2. Facilitate the use of great highland bagpipes and Scottish drums in military ceremonies, such as retirements, change of command, dining in/out, and funerals, by providing a convenient point of contact for military personnel to find qualified military bagpipers in their area.
  3. Provide information, support, and training to military personnel who want to learn how to play, or improve their skill level with, great highland bagpipes and Scottish drums.
  4. Provide information on the military tartans and the wearing of kilts in uniform.
